How do the application documents compare for the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa and the Spanish Non-Lucrative Visa?

The application documents for the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa and the Spanish Non-Lucrative Visa differ primarily in terms of financial requirements and proof of employment or income. While both visas require substantial documentation, the Digital Nomad Visa focuses on demonstrating remote work capabilities, whereas the Non-Lucrative Visa emphasizes financial independence without employment in Spain.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility criteria are crucial in understanding the kind of documentation you will need for each visa. The Spanish Digital Nomad Visa is aimed at individuals who can work remotely for companies outside of Spain. To be eligible, you must have a contract with a foreign company or proof of self-employment. On the other hand, the NLV targets those who can demonstrate sufficient financial means to support themselves during their stay in Spain without working.

Financial Documentation

For the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa, you must provide evidence of a steady income stream, usually through pay slips, bank statements, or contracts from your foreign employer. The income should be at least approximately $2,500 per month. In contrast, the Non-Lucrative Visa requires you to prove financial independence by showing bank statements or investment portfolios that amount to at least $30,000 annually, plus an additional amount per dependent.

Proof of Employment or Income

One of the pivotal document differences lies in proving your employment status or income source. The Digital Nomad Visa requires documentation such as employment contracts, proof of employment duration, and confirmation from your employer that you can work remotely. For the Non-Lucrative Visa, the focus is on demonstrating passive income sources like pensions, annuities, or other investments, as work is not allowed.

Health Insurance

Health insurance is mandatory for both visas, but the policies may vary. Applicants for the Digital Nomad Visa need to show proof of private health insurance that covers the entire duration of their stay in Spain, compliant with Spanish regulations. Similarly, those applying for the Non-Lucrative Visa must provide evidence of comprehensive health insurance without copayments.

Background and Criminal Record Checks

Both the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa and the Non-Lucrative Visa require a clean criminal record. Applicants must submit a nationwide criminal record certificate from their home country, typically covering the last five years. This document must be legalized or apostilled and translated into Spanish by a sworn translator.

Application Process

The application processes for both visas involve several steps, but some differences exist. For the Digital Nomad Visa, you can often start the application process online or through the Spanish consulate in your home country. You may need to attend an interview and provide biometric data. In contrast, the Non-Lucrative Visa application is usually initiated at the Spanish consulate, where you must submit all documents in person and may be required to undergo an interview.

Duration and Renewal

The initial duration for both visas is typically one year. However, the renewal process differs slightly. The Digital Nomad Visa can be renewed as long as you continue to meet the income requirements and your remote job remains valid. Meanwhile, the Non-Lucrative Visa can be renewed if you can still demonstrate financial independence and have spent at least six months per year in Spain during the visa’s validity.

Comparison with Other Visas

While this residence visa is ideal for retirees, the Spain DNV is designed for remote workers who wish to maintain their employment outside Spain. Each visa has its specific focus, but both provide a gateway to enjoying life in Spain without engaging in local employment.
